Move-Out Information

Everything you need to know about moving out.

Move Out

With the academic year coming to an end, residence hall move-out is fast approaching. Please see the tabs below for important move-out guidelines.

Hall Closing and Checkout Appointments

All students with 9-month housing contracts (freshmen and sophomores, including sophomore residents in Davis Square) must vacate the residence halls before noon on Thursday, May 13, but are encouraged to depart campus within 24 hours of their last final exam.

All students with 12-month housing contracts (juniors and seniors) who will not be living in the residence halls for the 2021-2022 academic year must vacate the residence halls before 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 16, but are encouraged to depart campus within 24 hours of their last final exam unless staying for commencement ceremonies.

Students will be responsible for scheduling a check-out appointment with hall staff between May 1 and May 13 (9-month contracts) or May 1-16 (12-month contracts) by using the Housing Portal to select an appointment time.

Prior to check-out, all students should complete this hall closing checklist, which includes cleaning the room and removing all personal items prior to the appointment time.

Guest Assistance

Each resident is permitted to have up to two family members or friends help with move-out. Guests must be checked in at the front desk. Guests are only permitted in the building during the four-hour period leading up to the student’s check-out appointment. Guests must follow the Creighton COVID-19 Community Standards while on campus.

Express Checkout

Express check-out is available for residents in Gallagher, Kiewit, Swanson, Deglman, McGloin, Heider, and Kenefick. Residents living in Opus and Davis are not eligible. Express check-out is only available for the first roommate moving out of a bedroom. Residents who do not share a bedroom or are the last to leave must schedule a standard check-out appointment with a Residential Life staff member.

To sign up for an express check-out, students can complete the form in the Housing Portal. Upon proceeding through the form, the student’s roommate will receive an email with a confirmation code. The student completing the express check-out must enter this code on the form to confirm the roommate has agreed to all express check-out notes. Students who complete/approve an express check-out are agreeing to split any damage and cleaning charges equally unless otherwise noted.

To complete an express check-out, students should go to the front desk after moving all personal items out of the room and cleaning the space. The Desk Receptionist will confirm the student’s express check-out status, and collect the room key (and mailbox key if applicable). The student must then vacate the building immediately.

Extended Stay Requests

The process for requesting an extended stay is available in the Housing Portal. The following groups may be eligible for an extended stay:

  • Current sophomores transitioning to a 12-month contract for an on-campus apartment in Opus Hall or Davis Square the week following final exams
  • Students who are enrolled in Summer Sessions, doing summer research with faculty, or completing summer internships in the Omaha area and planning to live on-campus during the summer
  • Students participating in Commencement activities
  • Students who are siblings of students participating in Commencement activities
  • Student-athletes participating in spring sports whose seasons are not complete by the end of the term

Additional requests for an extended stay will be taken into consideration but are not guaranteed. All requests for an extension should be submitted in the Housing Portal by Wednesday, May 5, 2021. Any requests after that date should be emailed to living [at] creighton [dot] edu for further consideration.

Please note that a request for an extended stay does not guarantee the availability of a student’s current housing assignment. Students may be relocated to an available room.

Cox Cable Box Return

Students who checked out a Cox cable box must return it to the Skutt Student Center information desk between 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday or 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekends. Cox will assess a $250 replacement fee for unreturned boxes. Creighton University is not responsible for cable boxes left behind.

Cable boxes may also be returned directly to a Cox Solutions Store.

Microfridge Return

Microfridge rentals should be unplugged, thawed, cleaned, dry, and easily accessible inside the room/apartment upon check-out.

Damage Billing

Residents are responsible for all damage repairs and excessive cleaning required in their rooms. Damage bills will be sent to students’ Creighton email accounts (which are still accessible beyond a student’s time at the University) with an outstanding balance and due date. Graduating or transferring does not exempt a student from paying outstanding damage fees.

Charges for students not returning to Creighton housing will be applied to any existing damage deposit. If the deposit is not sufficient to cover charges or fines, the student will be charged the additional amount.

Any remaining deposit funds will be returned to students. Checks will be sent to the mailing address in the student’s NEST account. Students are highly encouraged to utilize the direct deposit option to have refunds electronically transferred. Click here to view instructions to set up direct deposit.

Donations and Trash

Goodwill Omaha will accept donations of lightly used household items. Beginning May 6, consider bringing any unwanted items to the bins that will be placed on the first floor of your hall. Click here for a list of items accepted and not accepted.

Large dumpsters will be available near each hall to discard unwanted items that cannot be donated.
